Judge we'll need a delay because the Saints are in the playoffs

My friend Ray Ward has a post about some local lawyers who asked for a continuance of their jury trial because of the Saints game (which is being played in Chicago).  Maybe I'm missing something, but that doesn't seem like a motion that should have been filed.  Supposedly, it was granted.

Update: the Wall St. Journal Law Blog has a post about this.  I think it's great that people  (lawyers are people too) are excited about the Saints.  I'm really excited, but I try to keep my professional obligations prioritized above my fan-mania.  We all admire professional athletes who are disciplined and dedicated to winning, and 'giving it their all.' (Remember when Brett Favre played on Monday Night right after his father died?).  Not everyone is as driven as Brett Farve, and apparently that's true of the lawyers who asked for a continuance because of the Saints playoff game.

I think it's great and actually good lawyering. If it's only because the attorney wants to focus on the game, that MIGHT be a problem, but there is a lot more to consider here:I wouldn't want to go to trial on Monday. If the Saints win who knows what kind of shape the witnesses and jury (assuming it is a jury trial) would be in. And losing it could put the judge, jury and parties in the "wrong frame of mind".

In this particular case, I agree with the motion to continue. Someone on WWL yesterday likened the Saints 40 year history to Moses wandering around the desert for 40 years. In the belief that they are about to enter the Promised Land, I think a continuance is the prudent thing to do. I get the feeling the the motion was not opposed, but I am not sure.

Okay, I admit it: I'm wrong. There's no way the city is going to be functioning if the Saints win on Sunday (it's barely functioning now). You can't turn on the TV or walk down the streets without running into Saints Zombies filled with visions of Superbowl dancing in their heads. I sense something strange twisting around inside of me, and I can feel myself becoming absorbed in the euphoria. Obviously, resistance is futile.

Ernie - even one who cares not for professional football can enjoy the emotional boost of the Saints' success. Enjoy it: it's the only upbeat thing to come out of a building on Poydras Street in a long, long time.
