New Orleans, the bloody city (again)
Mon, March 20, 2006 It hasn't been even a month since the National Guard troops pulled out. And already it looks like we're on our way back to becoming a violent city where nighttime pedestrians can get blown away. The levees aren't fixed yet, but for awhile the crime problem was solved. Not anymore.
Interestingly, this brutal murder isn't even a front page story. I guess it's assumed that we all accept that our crime problem will return. I think that's a bad assumption. I'm not going to stay here in this city if the crime problem starts to return, and I'm pretty sure a lot of other people feel the same way.

Add to that the disarming of both resident and refugee New Orleanians by the CHP, Nat'l Guard units, and NOPD and you've got a ready-made victim base.
It's a sad state of affairs, and you're right that things like this should get more press. Of course, so should the opposite, where a law-abiding citizen handles law enforcement when the police force isn't available.
