Why I like my Apple laptop computer
Just checked to see how long it's been since I rebooted my laptop. It's been 20 days. I wouldn't be surprised if I go another 20 days without having to reboot.
There are three things I want in a laptop computer, which my Powerbook gives me: (1) rock solid stability (i.e. freedom from reboots and system hangs); (2) quick sleep and quick wake-up; and (3) automatic connection to any available wireless access point. The absence of pop-ups and viruses is just gravy.
Life is much easier with OS X than it was with Windows. Admitedly, there was a bit of getting used to things which was hard at first. But now it all flows smoothly, and my computer is always ready if I want to use it. I never had that experience with Windows, which is why I don't miss it in the slightest.
Later: Jon Udell has similar observations, although he also reports slight trouble. Main point: expectations are higher for OS X because performance is better. I obviously agree. And I agree with this fellow too who says "Apple isn't in a position to rest on its laurels yet, even if I don't think I'll ever like a notebook more than I like my iBook in terms of sheer 'pack up and go and expect it to work' simplicity."

I don't doubt that OS X is more stable than XP Pro, but for the record I often go weeks without a reboot.

I'm starting to look around for a new notebook. My law firm is an all-Microsoft shop: Office, with Outlook for mail, so on and so forth. However, I find the Powerbooks and the MacOS X system very tempting. Do you have any recommendations for navigating the Microsoft seas in a MacOS ship?
I apologize if you addressed this already. I've been pretty much absent from blogspace for about the last 6 months.
